FAQ

Do I need to take a placement test?

New students wanting to take a Spanish class above Beginner 1 must placement test. There is no charge for placement testing, but you must register for testing in advance. Please wait to register for your Spanish class until we have the results of your placement test. Prior to each new session we will post placement testing dates. We’re happy to answer any questions in the interim!

How do I reserve my seat?

Register for a class.

What other fees are there?

None. While some organizations charge for placement testing and materials, we charge a single comprehensive class tuition fee.

What curriculum do you use?

We use our custom curriculum that incorporates cultural and social justice themes. Having our own curriculum gives us creative control and allows us to keep your class cost low.

Do I need to pay in advance?

Yes. Only students who register and fully pay their tuition will be admitted to class. Teachers are not authorized to accept payment.

When does the next class session start?

Winter Session starts in January, with registration and testing late November & December
Spring Session starts in April, with registration and testing in February & March
Summer Session starts in June, with registration and testing in May & early June
Fall Session starts in September, with registration and testing in July & August

If you would like to receive an email once the new schedule is posted and placement testing dates are set, please add yourself to our Spanish Class email list.

If I have to drop during the session, can I get a refund or credit toward a future class?

Refunds are offered until 7 days before a class starts (minus a $40 administrative fee). We maintain this policy and apply it equally to all students–not doing so would have too much impact on our ability to manage class sizes, maintain a pool of capable teachers, and keep class tuition low. We do make exceptions for serious health issues and job layoffs.

Can I audit a class?

Generally, no. If you have a compelling reason please contact us to discuss further at CLASSES [at] AMERICAS.ORG.

Besides my Spanish class, what else does the La Conexión de las Américas have to offer?

Intercambios are Saturday morning language and cultural exchanges between native English and Spanish speakers. On the first Saturday of the month individuals can also participate in the Kitchen Connection, a language exchange where established residents and new Latino immigrants cook a great meal together. Coffee Hours are held in Spanish about half the time, and address wide-ranging coverage of Latin-American and Latino topics.

Conversation Classes are developed for intermediate-level speakers and stress reading and speaking. The conversation classes have different focus areas and frequently changing topics and teachers to be of continuing interest to the community. Topics generally include Latin-American literature and film, social justice and human rights issues.
