What are the realities at the border - beyond what we hear about in the news? Deborah Eide spent time at the U.S.-Mexico border this past summer, volunteering with the organization No More Deaths (No Más Muertes). No More Deaths is a a volunteer-run organization that provides humanitarian aid in an effort to end death and suffering on the border.
No More Deaths has released a major new report, A Culture of Cruelty, which details rampant U.S. Border Patrol abuse of migrants apprehended on the U.S.–Mexico border and includes many first-hand accounts by migrants. Come to hear details of Deborah’s experience and discuss what factors contribute to this reality at the border.
Deborah Eide is a teacher in the public school system and an artist. She learned about the dangers in crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in 2005 when she spent two months in Oaxaca, Mexico. There she lived with a family who had multiple stories of barely making it across the border in order to carve out a living in California and send money back home. The summer of 2005 was a very hot summer and many people died trying to cross the border because of inhumane treatment.
