We return to Cuba for the third and last time to see a fascinating film entitled Sons of Cuba, an apt title considering its contents. The small nation of Cuba is an Olympic boxing powerhouse, having won 32 gold medals, 19 silver medals, and 12 bronze medals for a total of 63 boxing medals.
Most of the athletes trained at the Havana Boxing Academy starting at the tender age of 9 years old. The film follows several boys through their time at the academy until Fidel Castro takes ill. Without the heart and soul of the country, many of Cuba’s boxing champions defect to the United States, leaving these boys as the only hopes Cuba has to continue its heritage.
The film is rated NR (unrated).
