La Conexion is proud to present Sugar, the third in our series of 8 Latin American film gems.
Two weeks ago we showed Sin Nombre, a Mexican/American film, but for this week’s film we are going south to the Caribbean to see a movie from the Dominican Republic, entitled Sugar.
Brief synopsis: An eager 19-year old baseball player signs with a Kansas City minor league team; the beginning of his dream: to play for New York in the Majors. As he works at learning English, baseball, American culture, and simply living a life in a different region with different habits, he must discover himself. He left behind a girlfriend and his family, and is living through hardship every day, but through all of the experiences, he still holds his dream. But the ultimate question is whether he can make it or not.
A great film, with all the more power because in 2008 more than 25% of the US’s baseball players were born in Latin America.
There is no admission charge, but free-will donations are welcome!
