Description

Kathya Cibelle will be speaking about the prison system in Brazil, utilizing her years of expertize as a Public Defender at the Penitentiary of Marilia, State of São Paulo - Brazil; More than that, she will also provide information about current political and social conditions in the country, including the newly- elected first woman president of the country. The audience will have the opportunity to engage in the discussion.

Biography

Kathya Cibelle Abreu de Sousa
Ms. Abreu de Sousa is a Public Defender at the Penitentiary of Marilia, State of São Paulo - Brazil. She holds a Bachelor of Law degree with a specialization in Criminal and Civil Law, Criminal and Civil Procedure and a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology. In her current position, Kathya provides legal aid to the inmate population at the penitentiary, writes petitions and appeals to submit to the local and supreme courts in order to guarantee prisoners the rights to change their detention status.
In her home town, besides her work as a lawyer she is in a weekly talk show on a local cable channel to discuss community problems, politics and topical subjects.
She volunteers in few NGO’s, such as Rotary International, one organization that provides professional training for disabled people and help them to find a job and human rights commissions. She is fluent in Portuguese, English, French and intermediate Spanish.
In this year at the Fulbright Humphrey Fellow Program, at University of Minnesota Law School, and due to her work with the inmate population, she is specializing in human rights development and protection, studies related to International Human rights Laws and treaties; she wishes to learn about how different countries deal with political prisoners situation and prison systems and rights of incarcerated populations; she is also very interested in learning about women and children human rights specially in Arabian countries and Africa.
