Colleen Beebe Purisaca, the co-director of Peace and Hope International, will share the incredible story of Paz y Esperanza (Peace and Hope), a human rights organization that began as a church-led response to injustice during Peru’s internal conflict in the 1980s. Over 25 years later, Paz y Esperanza continues to promote justice in Peru and has extended its work to Ecuador and Bolivia with supporting offices in the United Kingdom and the USA. Come hear about Paz y Esperanza’s pioneering work to combat violence against women and children and to build peace in Peru.
Biography
Colleen Beebe Purisaca is an attorney and Co-International Director of Peace and Hope International, the US office for Paz y Esperanza, a faith-based human rights organization founded in Peru. She uses her expertise in immigration matters, human rights, non-profit management, and Biblical justice to educate and train faith-based groups and others. Beebe Purisaca is an Adjunct Professor at Hamline University School of Law and has been an adjunct at the University of Minnesota Law School, teaching on the inter-American human rights system. She co-founded and directs the Park Avenue Walk-in Legal Clinic. Beebe Purisaca was the Director of Education at The Advocates for Human Rights (2004-2010); and a lawyer, paralegal, Executive and Deputy Director of the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (1988-2001; 1997-2004). A third culture Colombian and bilingual in Spanish/English, Beebe Purisaca has volunteered with the Minnesota Overground Railroad (1985-1991), the Colombia Support Group of Minnesota, Fundación Social in Colombia, Comunidad Kairós (1991-1992) and Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (1995) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Paz y Esperanza in Lima and Ayacucho, Peru (2002). She has received several awards for her service to the community and commitment to human rights and justice.
